COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local leaders and nonprofits are setting up emergency food programs as SNAP benefits for nearly 10,000 residents will end November 1; the loss of these funds will hit local grocery stores and jobs hard. The City of Kokomo and community groups are urging volunteers and donations to support the feeding program—resources are limited—so those in need can get food before the crisis worsens. - ➤ Community Foundation of Howard County held its Giving Day open house Tuesday at 215 W. Sycamore St. to help meet its $750,000 goal and welcomed local visitors with a huge balloon bouquet and free popcorn treats from Popcorn Café. Kokomo Tribune
- ➤ Chuck LaDow (executive director of Area Five Agency) said the nonprofit will expand its volunteer program as federal grants require local in-kind support while government funds tighten. Pharos-Tribune
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Valeria Cortes, a Logansport High School graduate, was one of four Indiana University Kokomo freshmen to be awarded the renewable Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship—worth up to $10,000 a year. IU Kokomo announced that Hannah Middlesworth from Converse and two other students will share a total award of up to $40,000. Pharos-Tribune
