COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday evening, first responders and residents gathered at Fairbanks Park for a rally despite temperatures above 90 — officials showed drone footage and K9 demonstrations. Organizers also offered kid-friendly attractions — including popsicles and a baby goat petting area.  Pharos-Tribune
  • On Thursday, July 24, IBE Kokomo held its 28th Annual Scholarship Luncheon at the Elite Conference Center where local leaders and the mayor gathered to support young scholars. The event celebrated 28 years of giving $74,000 and will award $4,500 in scholarships this year+ keynote speaker Raphael Sanchez urged everyone to use their gifts to help others.  Kokomo Lantern

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kokomo man named Joshua Blackwell, 32, is set to plead guilty in court for his role in a fatal shooting last March—charges include murder, unlawful firearm possession by a felon, obstruction of justice, and theft.  Kokomo Tribune
  • Central Middle School at 303 E. Superior St in Kokomo was temporarily placed in lockdown Friday morning after police received an anonymous threat via text message to the suicide prevention hotline — the threat related to a potential self-harm incident involving a firearm.  Kokomo Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Howard County Historical Society is gathering senior cords and decorated jeans from Kokomo High School graduates to build a local historical exhibit. The society currently has about 20 pairs + is accepting more donations and personal stories, with a selection on display at the Artworks Gallery through Aug. 29.  Kokomo Lantern

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northwestern has opened a new middle school addition that could change how sixth-graders use the building — they were the oldest students because they attended either Howard or Northwestern elementary schools.  Kokomo Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Representatives Yakym and Titus supported a new DOT proposal that would let drones fly beyond their visual line and no higher than 400 feet above ground from set locations. They said the rule will boost safety and innovation while building on bipartisan bills—aiming to expand both commercial and public safety uses.  Giant.fm
