COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community First Bank will host a free shred event on August 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its Kokomo branch at 1308 E. Hoffer St—community members may safely dispose of up to five boxes of documents while donations for local nonprofits are welcomed.  Kokomo Lantern
  • Samaritan Caregivers is selling locally raised mums in red, yellow, orange and purple until Aug 13—9-inch pots cost $12 and 12-inch pots cost $24.  Kokomo Tribune
  • At the Cass County 4-H Fair today, Dylan Miller (age 10) was named HeifersGrand champion.  Pharos-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • An artist in Kokomo is featuring the life of Xenia Grigoryevna Petrova, known as Xenia of St. Petersburg, at Artist Alley. She is celebrated for giving all her possessions to the poor after her husband’s tragic death and spending 45 years living humbly, asking those she helped — to turn to God and say a memorial for him.  Kokomo Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana University Kokomo announced it is adding 13 new faculty members this fall in departments such as psychology, education, business, nursing and computer science—executive vice chancellor Scott Jones said the new hires bring diverse global experience and fresh ideas to support students on campus.  Kokomo Lantern

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced that southbound U.S. 31 will close later this month and warned drivers to slow down and use caution.  Kokomo Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eastern football, led by head coach Josh Edwards, will build on last fall's success—when the team won its first IHSAA sectional championship—and enter a challenging 2025 season with key returners and rivalry games starting on Aug. 22. The Comets aim to perform strongly as they take on this tough schedule.  The Kokomo Post
  • The Kokomo High School Marching Wildkats placed third last Friday night at the Indiana State Fair Band Day competition—marking their fourth straight top-three finish. They won state titles in 2022 and 2023 and the KHS color guard was named best guard for the third consecutive year.  Kokomo Tribune
