- ➤ Downtown Kokomo hosts Get Schooled, a back-to-school celebration with discounts at local shops and restaurants, live music, and public art. The event runs today from 5:30—8 p.m. with after-hours activities for those over 21 starting at 8 p.m. Kokomo Tribune
- ➤ The Cass County Community Foundation awarded five local organizations a total of $19,000 in opportunity grants for needs up to $5,000 at a press conference held Thursday afternoon at its office—729 E. Market St. Pharos-Tribune
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A new Indiana law went into effect July 1 to tackle chronic absenteeism by requiring schools to report absences with clearer statewide guidelines—local prosecutors may also meet with parents before charges are filed. The law defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% of instructional days for any reason and requires schools to secure medical documentation when a student misses 20 days due to health issues. - ➤ Taylor Community Schools (TCS) hosted a school bus test drive in a parking lot where a reporter learned that driving the bus (which had extra mirrors to watch) was easier than expected. The trial showed that future drivers can manage the bus with care using techniques similar to driving a car. Kokomo Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ INDOT is nearly done with repairs along State Road 931 and will soon move crews to repair U.S. 31 in Howard County. Mayor Tyler Moore said traffic will be rerouted during a planned mile-long shutdown—reconstruction work is expected to be completed in the second quarter. Kokomo Lantern
- ➤ The Board of Public Works and Safety met Wednesday morning and approved an emergency demolition at 1344 S. Jay St.—the property was deemed a public safety hazard. Kokomo Tribune

- ➤ The Howard County Sports Hall of Fame announced its 2025 class honoring seven Kokomo sports figures including Zach Adams, Hillary Beck, Brian Cossell, Dan Dumoulin, Harold "Rowdy" Elliott, Herman Fowler, and Ron Barsh.
