  • Local food pantries face new challenges this summer as federal cuts and the state's drop of the SUN Bucks program force them to find new ways to feed hungry kids—agencies will adjust operations to reach more children in need.  Pharos-Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kokomo man was injured in an attempted armed robbery near CR 600 North and CR 150 East on Thursday—three people from Logansport were arrested after search warrants at two residences produced evidence linking them to the shooting, battery, and theft, and the victim was treated and later released from Logansport Memorial Hospital.  Giant.fm

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kokomo Park Band is partnering with Kokomo-Howard County Public Library to host its 30th Annual Youth Multicultural Rhythm Workshop under the direction of Art Reiner to help first through fifth graders learn teamwork and mutual respect. The workshop will be held at the downtown library from June 16-18 (participants are required to attend all three days).  Kokomo Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In the spring semester, 722 full-time IU Kokomo students earned academic honors—those on the chancellor’s list achieved a 4.0 GPA while dean’s list students earned at least a 3.5 GPA while taking 12 or more credit hours.  Kokomo Lantern
  • At school board meetings in Howard County this spring, officials reported a positive trend in IREAD scores — teachers credited new reading methods for the improvement.  Kokomo Tribune
  • Indiana University Kokomo students will have paid internships in clean energy through the Fueling the Future program funded by a $15,000 grant from Duke Energy Foundation — the Office of Sustainability will work with local employers to set up up to five placements to give students hands-on work experience while they study.  Giant.fm

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A housing project announced in December is moving forward with a plan that may reduce property taxes for its owners. On June 2, the city council discussed a payment in lieu of tax that would have owners pay a flat rate of $7,400 annually for the first 15 years—replacing full taxes.  Pharos-Tribune
